Dear Beauty 365,

Once and for all, should I or shouldn’t I pop my zits?!

Ready To Pop
New Brunswick, NJ

Dear Ready To Pop,

Funny you ask that.

I’ve got a couple “situations” going on near my left cheek and I was recently wondering the same thing! I confess to having popped more than one zit in my day, but I do my best to avoid it. The single solution that has worked best for me has 3 important steps:

1. Keep hands off offending zit.

2. Dab toner containing salicylic acid on offending zit after washing face.

3. Keep hands OFF offending zit (really – this part is important!)

Simple, right? But, this method can take a while. And, sometimes, it can be hard to follow steps 1 and 3 after waiting a several long days while the offending zit dies its slow death. Can you believe that some people even get a teeny bit of satisfaction from popping a zit?! Uh, yeah, me neither…

Moving right along.

I thought it prudent to seek medical advice regarding this urgent skin care situation. So, I pulled out my trusty copy of the venerable Dr. Oz’s book and read up on how to lance a pimple.

Ohhh, Home Spa Initiative, how I love thee! Weekly skin treatments are not only fun, but pretty great for your skin!

PhotobucketThis week’s mini-facial is courtesy of Alba Botanica’s Hawaiian Papaya Enzyme Facial Mask ($13). Not only is this mask super affordable and long-lasting – it really works! The marquee ingredients are papaya and pineapple enzymes which both work to get rid of old skin cells, so that your yummy healthy skin can shine through.

Here’s a random pic of me with the mask on:

Be ready for some skin tingling with this mask while the enzymes are hard at work. As always, be sure to keep it away from your eyes! This product earns eco-friendly points by not testing on animals and being 100% vegetarian. You’ve got not excuse not to check it out!

Let me know how it goes!

I Love My Clarisonic!

Beauties, all the rumors you’ve heard are true.

The Clarisonic Skin Care System ($195) is the best thing since sliced bread for taking care of that beautiful skin of yours.

This lovely little skin care brush is essentially a high-powered brush designed for cleansing the skin. It’s made by the same folks behind the Sonicare toothbrush and uses that same magical technology to produce 300+ brush rotations per minute.

The Clarisonic is gentle enough for sensitive skin and even helps the skin absorb products better. In fact, in the long run you will end up having to use less product because it will absorb in the skin much better. Also, countless dermatologists recommend it and use it in their practice…

My face has been very happy these past few weeks.

And, I’ve got SK II’s new Cellumination Essence Hydrating Serum ($150) to thank. This gel serum has a very light texture that my skin really likes. I use it as my daytime serum (underneath my SPF moisturizer) and it’s definitely one of the reasons I’ve been getting even more compliments on my skin these days :)

Random Tidbit: Once upon a time, scientists noticed that the hands of sake brewery workers in Japan were extraordinarily youthful and soft. SK II products contain Pitera, an ingredient that these nifty scientists isolated from the sake fermentation process.

I’ve always thought that was such a cool story!

Let me know if you’ve ever tried any SK II products!

This smells so good I wanna eat it! It brightens my skin really well, too.

Juice Beauty’s Green Apple Peel Full Strength ($45) was my first foray into the world of the exfoliating treatment mask and I’m happy to report smoother, brighter and more supple skin as a result.

As part of my Home Spa Initiative, I bought this at Sephora to use in my weekly mini-facial routine (detailed post in the pipeline!) After cleansing and toning, I paint a layer of this treatment onto my face and neck using an inexpensive concealer brush and leave it on for 15 minutes…

Hey Beauties,

I’ve been getting a lot of questions lately on how to take care of facial skin, so I decided to write a post about it.

I admit, the skin care and beauty worlds can be very confusing! Between all the products and tools and claims, it’s easy to lose sight of the basics of healthy skin. Of course, it is important to find the right products for your skin type and for any specific skin care concerns you might have, such as acne. Now without further ado, here are the basic skin care tips of my routine…
