Guest Beauty: Brush Lovin’

by Marian Tascio

I’ve really been liking my hair lately.

It’s generally a fairly nondescript mass pulled back in a ponytail with barettes holding down the wisps on the sides. OK, I admit that it actually is in a ponytail right now, but not for the usual reasons. I normally wear it back because my hair has a slight natural wave and a tendency to frizziness that team up to render it perpetually agitated, never smooth like the calm locks that so many other women seem to have. But for the past month my hair seems to have been trying out what it might be like to walk on the calm side…

I started using some new brushes by BrushLab. My favorite, the Fresh Square Cushion Brush ($11), has been getting a lot of mileage: I think it’s the one primarily responsible for the mellowing of my hair. I use it throughout the day whenever my hair seems to be getting worked up or out of hand, and within a few strokes I can begin to feel that evasive, tranquil smoothness coming back. It’s almost therapeutic!

My second favorite, the Pretty Pink Dual Mirror Brush ($10), feels delicious on my scalp—like a massage—and has proven perfect for that after-shower detangling or final tidying before bed. The travel brush has a mirror on the back, which is cool, but I never felt comfortable carrying it around in my purse because I know from experience that loose, unprotected mirrors become heavily smudged or cracked when I do that. I wish the travel brush came with some sort of cover for the mirror; then I would probably pack it up and bring it everywhere.

The third brush I tried—the Orange Ceramic Jumbo Brush ($13) that promises to “reduce frizz”— probably does just that for many women, but I found my hair was more static-prone after I used it. It would probably work well for women who have an authentic hair-styling routine with a blow dryer and mousse: something foreign to my world since I quit working to stay home with my son.

There’s a good chance that I will break out that orange jumbo the next time I have to get dolled up. As for the cushion and dual mirror brushes, they have earned my undying loyalty.
