I wouldn’t go so far as to say that Apricot Scrub saved my life, but during my first weeks as a mother, sometimes it felt that way. When we came home from the hospital, I found myself suddenly clinging to parts of my beauty routine that had never seemed all that important before namely flossing and washing my face with Apricot Scrub. They’re pretty similar when you think about it: intense, thorough and a little painful, like tough love or a deep muscle massage. I guess digging into my gums and pores felt like I was weeding all the yuckiness out of my Cesarean experience so I could enjoy my baby and reclaim my body from the surgeon.
I was using St. Ives at the time, but since then I’ve tried out a couple of store brands, namely CVS and Target, and found them just as good. St. Ives has changed its formula a bit; it’s silkier now and the grains are smoother, but that’s not why I switched. It was all about the money. I quit my job to raise my son, so we buy store brands a lot now.
Finances aside, though, I’m glad I’ve been using the generic scrub because it still offers that gritty, purify-from-the-roots-up feeling. That’s not to say I’d never use St. Ives again—there’s something to be said for silky, and it smells prettier than the store brands.
But for now, with a history of blemish-prone skin and without much time or money to spend on a multi-step skin care process, I enjoy having that one kick-butt product in my medicine cabinet that makes me feel like those thirty seconds at the sink really do get the grime out.
