Ask Beauty 365: Your Beauty Questions Answered

Dear Beauty 365,

I really love the way facial skin looks with a light dusting of powder, but the ones I’ve tried make me FEEL the makeup. It’s like the layer of powder is trapping the oil on my skin and keeping it there. I want to wipe my face off all day! I even tried Bare Minerals, one of those companies that claim to be completely “natural,” and even that felt yucky.

I don’t wear foundation regularly, but I would like to wear a nice, light, clean powder to even out my skin tone and erase shine. Got any suggestions?

Dear Liz,

You’re in luck!

A few months ago I was faced with a similar dilemma. I wanted a very light powder to combat the shine that I sometimes get as the day (or night) goes on. My skin is pretty even, so I also didn’t need much in terms of coverage or color.

Several of my friends have spoken highly of MAC powders, specifically the Studio Fix line. I’m a MAC fan, too, so after doing a little research of my own I learned of their Blot Powder. This product sounded like what I needed and turned out to be just that!

Blot Powder comes either pressed or loose and in several neutral shades. Its main function is to absorb oil and to lightly mattify the skin without the marked change in coverage or texture that heartier powders are designed for. The coloring it imparts is sooooo minimal that it’s virtually unnoticeable.

This is a good product for touching up any oily areas on your face that may pop up as the day goes on, in fact that is what it was designed for. Feel free to apply as often as needed.

I have the pressed version in Deep Dark, because I prefer pressed over loose powders. The SPF contained in my current face moisturizer can make my face a little shiny at times, and Blot Powder works really well at taking away that shine. This product is very light as well and I for sure don’t feel like I have a lot of gunk on my face when I use it.

The compact comes with a little cosmetic puff, but I have a powder brush that I use to apply it. You also get a little mirror in the roof of the compact, which is always fun and useful. MAC’s Blot Powder costs twenty bucks so it is a bit of an investment, but you can always return it if you don’t like it!

Let me know what you think!

Stay Beautiful!

That sounds like it’s worth a try … thank you! I’ll let you know what I think.

I just bought this! I like it a lot, but I’ve learned not to apply it too soon after putting on my daily 30 SPF moisturizer, as the moisturizer sucks in the color and my face ends up yellower in places. I use a makeup brush to apply it, and am happier with it than I was with my similiar Clinique powder as it’s just a tad heavier.

    yay, Jen!
