I finally gave in and bought Smith’s Rosebud Salve a few months ago.
I’d read countless rave reviews in magazines and decided it was time to see what all the fuss was about. Plus, the tin it comes in has a cool, vintage-y feel to it, which I really liked.
It was an impulse purchase that I added to my basket on trip # 1,094,293 to Sephora. Of course I was buying more products that I probably don’t really need, but that’s another story…
Rosebud Salve is marketed as an “all purpose skin preparation” that can be used to soothe babies’ butts, rough cuticles, chapped lips and more. It’s been around since 1892 when a druggist whipped the formula up and has had the same packaging since 1962.
This all sounds terribly “medical” and complicated, but this is essentially petroleum jelly with cotton seed and other oils blended in. Nothing more, nothing less.
I mainly use it as a lip balm, and in this capacity I find that it falls sadly short. I wasn’t expecting a Beauty Rush or anything, but this is just reddish Vaseline. And I hate petroleum jelly as a lip balm. It dissipates so quickly and doesn’t provide me with the lasting moisture that my lips need.
This product could work for those of you who prefer a more lightweight, low-shine lip balm.
Smith’s Salve works well as a spot treatment hand moisturizer. I’ve used it on the skin between my thumb and index finger plenty of times.
It smells really strangely to me, kind of like roses-gone-wrong, but, thankfully, the scent isn’t very strong once applied. As for texture, it is very similar to petroleum jelly, since that is the main ingredient. This product is a pale red in color and pretty cheap at about $6 per tin.
